Independent Reading Assignment – English III
Each student must complete TWO independent reading assignments EACH SEMESTER. This means that it must be a text that we are not reading together in class. Independent reading can come from any genre: science fiction, fantasy, young adult lit, fan fiction, graphic novels, manga, fiction, poetry, essays, instructional books, religious texts, short stories, etc. I encourage you to find something that is of interest to you—a text that you want to read. If you are having trouble finding something of interest to you, meet with Mrs. Watts or one of the librarians, and figure out what works for YOU.
Both texts must be read and have the corresponding assignment turned in before the semester test. You can complete these assignments at any point throughout the semester.
Independent reading texts must comply with the following guidelines:
· Be within your reading level.
· Be an appropriate length.
· Contain school-appropriate content.
· Obtain approval from Mrs. Watts before beginning.
After reading each text, you must complete one of the following assignments. (I am also open to suggestions on possible projects, so talk to me if you have an awesome idea!!!)
· Complete a book review
· Do a 3-5 minute book talk (oral report) for the class; must contain 1 visual aide
· Create a commercial advertising your book
· Create a poster advertising your book
· Mosaic – template and directions provided separately
· Using a song of your choice, switch the lyrics to ones that tell the overall story of your book, and write them in song form.
· Create a comic strip based on your book.
· Create a power point or prezi about your reading selection.
Each assignment must contain:
· Title, Author, Genre
· Theme
· Brief Synopsis
· Star Rating (1/2-5)
· Your personal response to the book
· If you liked {insert movie or book}, then you will also like {insert your book}
· Illustration or visual aide
You cannot do each type of assignment more than once. Each assignment will be graded based on accuracy, effort, creativity, and timeliness. Each book and corresponding assignment is worth 5% of your grade. (total per semester 10%)

WEEK of 9/28-10/2
Continue to work towards your Independent Reading Assignment completion. TWO are due at the beginning of December, so don't put it off!!!
Also, I am at school EARLY and stay LATE, so please come by and see me if you need a book approved, or if you want to run an idea for a project by me.
WEEK of 9/21-9/25
We have survived our first month of school, and are settled in to our routines by now. Along with settling in, comes the need to be reminded of some basic information. There are a few things that I have talked to each class about, and wanted to post those things here:
*As wonderful as cell phones are, they need to be put away once class has started. There may be times that phones can be used on an assignment, but that will be an exception, not the standard practice. I have reminded several students several times to keep their phones put away. I will begin to call parents if having phones out continues to be an issue.
*Students have Independent Reading assignments that need to be started. Each student has a copy explaining what that is, how much it affects their grade, and specifics on completing the reading projects. Please begin this process asap!!! ABOVE this post is a copy of what was handed out in class.
WEEK of 9/14-9/18
It was a pleasure to meet so many parents at Open House last Thursday evening. Thank you for coming, and also for picking an apple from the Wishing Tree! I have received some items already that will help make our classroom run smoothly! The following are items I would still love to have donated:
Wrapped candy
Clorox wipes - generic brands are awesome as well
College ruled paper
Markers
We are in full swing of our semester, and it will go by quickly. PLEASE remember to start working on the Independent Reading assginments. The end of the semester will be here before you know it. Remember: You MUST get approval from me prior to working on your novel/project. It only takes a minute to talk to me about it and to sign the form you have in your binder.
WEEK of 9/8-9/11
Parents and Students: Please remember that this Thursday, the 10th, is Open House at BAHS from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Come spend some time seeing what a mini version of our days look like!
Feeling generous??? Several students are still in need of a binder and a compostion notebook for this class. If you would like to donate either one of these items, please bring it with you to Open House, and I will make sure to get it to someone who would benefit from your donation. We are all in this together! Yes, now the High School Musical song is stuck in my head as well.....
Looking forward to a great week!
WEEK OF 8/31-9/4
I am SURE that everyone is aware already, but just in case you don't know, we have a short week this week. Students will have a NICE, LONG weekend, as school will NOT be in session this Thursday (3rd) and Friday (4th) due to Professional Development days. Enjoy the time off!
I wanted you to ALSO know, that when you are looking at Parent Connect, and happen to see a BLANK, that does not necessarily mean that the assignment is missing or that it is a zero. It most likely means I am in the process of plugging grades in, and just haven't gotten to that cell yet. I will be SURE to mark an assignment as MISSING/ ABSENT/ZERO, which ever the case may be, so you can know what needs to be addressed.
Be sure to check here each week to see what we have going on!!

SUPPILES for English III Marla Watts/D104
Hello, and welcome to my class! I am looking forward to getting to know each of you, and learning with you this school year. Let's get off to a great start by making sure we have what we need to do our work.
I have made this supply list as PAINLESS and as INEXPENSIVE as possible. Please have your supplies with you NO LATER than Monday 8/24.
*A 1-inch 3-ring binder that will be JUST FOR THIS CLASS. Make SURE it's a binder with pockets.
*A set of tabs to use for your binder (At least 4 tabs - Notes/Handouts/Homework/Tests)
*Lined paper for your binder
*A compositon notebook to put in your binder pocket
*A package of notecards (lined or unlined, whatever you get is great)
*Pen/Pencil/Highlighter - Have a few of each of these items so we don't spend class time looking for something to write with. These might even be FREE if you have some at home already!
*Last, but definitely not least, is a BOX of TISSUES. Please, please makse sure at some point to help out by bringing these. We have LOTS of noses to keep up with as we go from allergy season, to cold season, then back to allergy season. Tissues are ALWAYS needed.
Thanks, in advance, for taking care of your supply list in a timely manner. Use some leftover supplies from last year if you have them, with the exception of the tissues. Yeah, those need to be new ones.....
